The program’s core is woven around four interconnected modules that build on the preparatory materials. These modules provide a comprehensive, systemic understanding of sustainability, with the protection of our natural resources and biosphere at the center:
- Basics & Nature
Gain insight into today’s global socio-economic landscape and explore why a fundamental transformation is necessary. Understand the link between the pursuit of infinite economic growth, planetary boundaries, and climate change.
- Finance & Money
Examine the role of money, international banking systems, financial markets, and ethics within the monetary system. Explore alternative approaches, such as complementary currencies, while tackling the key question: “How can financial markets serve eco-social interests instead of their own?”
- Economics with social and ecological values
At the heart of the summer university, this module explores transformative alternatives for reforming economic and financial systems. Topics include Doughnut Economics, democratic banking, de-growth, positive money, reduced working hours, and more — approach solutions from a holistic perspective!
- A social-ecological transformation
Dive into the socio-political dimensions of transformation, including activism, power structures, and systemic change. Collaborate on group projects addressing social, ecological, or economic challenges, present your solutions, and reflect on key learnings of the entire program.
- Wrap-Up and Synthesis
Ongoing reflection sessions throughout the program provide space to consolidate and connect the many concepts, ideas, and experiences explored. This final module allows you to synthesize your learnings and deepen your understanding of systemic change.
Well prepared
Before the program kicks off in Vienna, you will receive preparatory materials, including 3–4 scientific articles, to help you get familiar with the topic — even if you haven’t studied economics before. You’ll also complete a short introductory exercise, such as describing three narratives for an alternative economy, to submit prior to the start of the program.
Overarching and far-reaching
The program provides a broad and comprehensive overview of alternative approaches to economy and finance. Designed to be accessible and enriching for participants from all fields of study, no prior knowledge is required.
Join AEMS and let it be your starting point on a journey toward creating a more eco-socially just future!
